Среди «новых начинаний» года — начало работы среди японцев. Первая попытка христианизировать японцев в Калифорнии была предпринята в связи с Первой конгрегационалистской церковью в этом городе. Первые крещеные японцы были приняты в эту церковь; но работа была заброшена, и другие деноминации восполнили наш прискорбный недостаток служения. Начало было положено снова, на этот раз в Окленде. Г-н Н. Кусаки, молодой японец, окончивший прошлым летом Тихоокеанскую теологическую семинарию, возглавил это начинание. Он до сих пор помогает в нем, хотя теперь оно передано в руки американской леди в качестве главного учителя. В настоящее время это эксперимент, но он подает хорошие надежды на успех.
Еще одно интересное событие, которое, однако, датируется чуть более чем годом назад, — это Общество иностранных миссий, организованное нашими китайскими братьями. Это движение было спонтанным; никакая спешка или даже предложение с моей стороны не послужили его причиной. Оно было приведено в почти полное рабочее состояние до того, как я узнал о нем. Его главная цель — поддерживать миссионерскую деятельность в Южном Китае, провинциях, откуда прибыли наши братья. Но его девиз — не что иное, как «Китай для Христа». Они уже собрали почти 250 долларов, пожертвованных не от избытка, а из глубокой нищеты.
Еще один интересный момент — заметное изменение в духовной атмосфере некоторых наших миссий — особенно в Стоктоне, Петалуме и Оровилле. Это, кажется, предвещает «широкую и эффективную дверь», которая скоро откроется перед нами, и дай Бог, чтобы у нас были люди и средства войти в нее для агрессивной и победоносной кампании.
